Free...yes, FREE camping for PBR

Friend of the PBR, Jamie Auch, was able to secure free camping for New Year's Eve at Zen Tubing in Asheville!  There are ZERO facilities, but it's free and only 2.5 miles from the start.  The address is 1648 Brevard Rd and there should be plenty of space for everyone.

Again, no electricity, water, or bathrooms...come prepared.  The Rice Pinnacle parking lot in Bent Creek is probably the closest pit toilets if you need em.

Time for fun and games!

First game of the PBR - There's something almost all of us have and whomever has the oldest wins a prize from Hi-Wire Brewing.  You have to bring it with you!

You don't have to answer in the form of a question!

Random Bits

Just a list of random bits;

As of 12/16 it looks like we should have at least 8-10 buses attending!  I was hoping for 5.

My pre-drive data is available in the Garmin/Google files posted to the right, but long story short......in my Subaru Outback the route took 4h 11m for 127 miles.  There's at least one significant bail out point if this whole thing takes way longer than expected.

Food & Fuel services are pretty much unavailable from mile 0 to 85.  Please plan accordingly!

There are plenty of gas stations, fast food, and a grocery store near the start, but please remember it's a holiday.  I would suggest packing a lunch.

Hi-Wire also hosts a monthly VW gathering on the first Sunday of every month.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. How challenging are the dirt/gravel road sections?

It all depends on how you drive!  There is nothing on these roads that should damage any vehicle when driven properly and with caution.  They are forest service maintained gravel roads open to the public to reach trailheads for camping, hiking, etc.  These are NOT 4x4 roads, Jeep trails, etc.  I have driven every one of these roads in small 2wd imports without any issues.

2. How long will trip take?

The full route w/ a couple stops will take multiple buses at least 4hrs!  Pack a lunch!!

3. Is this family friendly?

Of course....spouses, partners, kids, dogs, cats....everyone is welcome!

4. Is the event 'rain or shine'?

Kind of....if the roads are safe we will proceed.  If there is serious weather we will evaluate the situation and make a call on any route changes or cancellation.

What to bring

EVERYTHING

Bring anything and everything you will need to get your vehicle through a 100 mi trip in cold weather.  Parts, tools, gas, supplies, tow ropes, chains, jack stands, cell phones, CB radio, your mother-in-law, food, etc.....

If you want it - BRING IT
If you might need it - BRING IT
If you think someone else might need it - BRING IT

We all know the challenges of these wonderful vehicles.  Odds are someone is going to need some help along the way.  Nobody gets left behind!

Welcome!

Welcome to the home of the PBR (Pisgah Bus Rally), an annual VW rally for air-cooled buses to get together and take a challenging spin through the wild roads of Western North Carolina.

The ride is tentatively scheduled for January 1, 2015.

The idea is for everyone to finish together, in one piece, and enjoy an afternoon at one of Asheville's fine breweries.
